Also available electronically on Workstation B in the Trowbridge Reference Room.- Introductory bibliography for the study of scripture - Joseph A. Fitzmyer
Call Number: Z7770 G5 1990 (Trowbridge Reference Room)
This is a bibliography that is not intended to be comprehensive, but rather aims to present a list of basic titles in the field that are important for the student who is beginning the study of scripture. Despite being a guide to basic resources, the bibliography contains over 700 entries. Chapters are topical and cover both different types of research tools (i.e., bibliographies, periodicals, concordances, dictionaries, etc.) and types of literature related to scriptural studies (i.e., biblical versions, apocryphal literature, gnostic materials, literature of the intertestamental period, etc. Most sections subdivide by Bible as a whole, Old Testament and New Testament. Each chapter begins with a brief description of the type of reference source listed. The annotations tend to be more than simply a line or two. Entries are numbered and the index refers to the entry number, not to the page. Each entry is also assigned an abbreviation (i.e., New Testament Abstracts = NTA) and a list of all abbreviations is provided. The index is only by author, not by subject or title. - Internationale Zeitschriftenschau für Bibelwissenschaft und Grenzgebiete = International review of Biblical studies = Revue internationale des études bibliques

Vol. 2 adds 50 journals (many non-Catholic), 1930-75, and includes references to some 800 books analyzed chapter by chapter. Vol. 3 adds 43 new titles, many related to Near Eastern studies, 1930-83, and also includes chapters of 450 books." (Balay) - Basic tools of biblical exegesis : a student’s manual - Stanley B. Marrow
Call Number: Z7770 M33 1976 (Trowbridge Reference Room)

There are eight sections covering various kinds of exegetical tools: 1) Bibliographical Sources 2) Texts and Versions 3) Grammars 4) Lexica 5) Dictionaries 6) Concordances 7) Apocrypha and Pseudepigrapha 8) Subsidiary Material. This work is a selective, annotated bibliography of secondary resources on the Bible that are useful for preaching and teaching within the church. Approximately 2200 titles by 1300 scholars are covered. Resources were selected based first, upon their usefulness for theological interpretation of the Bible within the context of the faith of the church, second, for their significance in the history of interpretation, and finally, works that represent evangelical and evangelical Wesleyan scholarship were also selected. Thus, the work has an evangelical and Methodist slant. The intended readership for this work is seminary students and ministers. The goal of the work is to acquaint students with the major works, significant publishers, and prominent scholars in biblical studies. Out of print works are also included. While priority is given to evangelical, Wesleyan perspectives, works by authors from a variety of theological traditions are also included. Most sections divide into “highly recommended” works and “also significant”. A brief, one paragraph annotation is provided for each work. In addition to sections on each individual book of the Bible, there is a chapter on resources for the Bible as a whole that covers resources such as atlases, periodicals, concordances, dictionaries, etc. as well as topics such as biblical theology, ethics, archaeology and hermeneutics. 7. Dictionaries & Encyclopedias: Hebrew Bible/Old Testament
Dictionary of the Old Testament. Pentateuch - editors, T. Desmond Alexander, David W. Baker
Call Number: BS1225.52 .D53 2003 (Trowbridge Reference Room)
This work is published by Intervarsity Press. It follows the format and approach of previous encyclopedias by the same publisher on the New Testament. The arrangement is alphabetical by topic, and most articles are of extensive length (no article is less than 1000 words, and some exceed 10,000 words). Thus, it is does not provide brief definitions and is more of an encyclopedia than a dictionary. It is thus of little help for quick, ready-reference, but provides more of an in depth approach to various topics related to the Pentateuch. According to the preface, “Some articles touch on areas rarely examined. Other articles provide helpful surveys, leading one into an understanding of the current state of discussion. Others take critical assumptions to task, seeking at least to identify the albatross if not to remove it…” The perspective throughout is definitely of an evangelical, conservative approach, but other perspectives are addressed. Within the articles, reasoned arguments for or against the different perspectives on a topic are offered. Each article is signed by the author. Extensive bibliographies are provided at the end of each entry. Cross-references are provided. Scripture and subject indexes are provided, as well as two maps of Palestine and the Ancient Near East during the period of the Pentateuch.
Theological wordbook of the Old Testament - R. Laird Harris, editor
Call Number: BS440 T49 (Trowbridge Reference Room)
"A work for the "busy pastor or earnest Christian worker who has neither the time nor background for detailed technical study," but who needs, "a tool for the study of the significant words of the Hebrew Bible."--Introd. Essays on the words selected for extensive treatment were contributed by 46 evangelical scholars of various denominations and are signed with the contributors' initials. Words not chosen for essay treatment are given one-line definitions. Arrangement is according to the consonants of the Hebrew alphabet; related words are presented with the root from which they derive. Bibliographies accompany many of the articles. An index employing the numbers from James Strong's Exhaustive concordance of the Bible facilitates access." (Balay)
Theological dictionary of the Old Testament - edited by G. Johannes Botterweck and Helmer Ringgren
Call Number: PJ4833 T5 (Trowbridge Reference Room)
Multi-volume Bible dictionary. Alphabetical by topic, entries are transliterated from the Hebrew. The focus in this dictionary is both linguistic and theological. Entries provide in-depth discussions of the key Hebrew and Aramaic words in the Old Testament. Contributors are international scholars from diverse religious traditions and thus exhibit a diversity of theological viewpoints. Entries typically treat the head term along with cognates and semantically related lexemes. Included is etymological analysis (which may involve investigation of sources in other ancient Near Eastern languages), a survey of the number and distribution of occurrences in the Old Testament, an overview of characteristic syntactical contexts, delineation of the semantic field, consideration of the theological significance of the data, and a bibliography. Frequently, translation equivalents that are found in the Septuagint are mentioned and, where relevant, usage in the Dead Sea Scrolls is discussed. Here and there, reference is made to rabbinic usage and apocryphal/pseudepigraphal connections. This is an important reference work for scholars working in the original language of the Hebrew scriptures.- Thesaurus of the language of the Bible : complete concordance : Hebrew Bible dictionary : Hebrew-English Bible dictionary - edited by Samuel E.
