Using Databases to Find Articles

There are various databases that can help you identify journal articles in the subject area of theology. On this page of the guide we've highlighted the best ones for theological studies. However, there are many more databases available to you on the Databases & Article Searching page of the Yale University Library's web site.

Every database is somewhat different, but most allow you to search by Author, Title, Subject or Keyword. Sometimes, an instructional guide or help for the database is available by clicking on the More Info button in the record for the database.ATLA Database More Info link

If you find yourself having problems in searching a database, don't hesitate to ask a librarian for assistance.

Many of the databases will provide not only a citation for the article, but a link to the full text of the article. However, not all databases provide this. If you don't see a link from the citation to the article in full text, it may still be available in full-text from another database. Look for the Yale Linksbutton and click on it to see if the article is available in full-text from another database.

If the article you want is not available in full-text through any of the library's databases, you will have to see if it is available in print. Search the Orbis catalog for the journal title (NOT the article title) by using Journal/Newspaper/Magazine Title as the search type. Be sure to note which library holds the journal, and whether or not it has the specific issue in which the article you want is located.

 

Print Indexes

While more and more journal articles can be searched using electronic databases, print indexes are still available and can be helpful, especially if you have a very specific topic in mind or if you are looking for more historical material not covered by the electronic databases. The following is a selected list of some of the print indexes available at the Divinity Library.

  • Bibliographia internationalis spiritualitatis
    Call Number: Z7819 B5
    Focuses on Roman Catholic theology and covers around 500 journals. Although it is international in scope, its main focus are journals produced in the west. It is issued annually.
  • Index to Periodical Literature on the Apostle Paul - compiled under the direction of Bruce M. Metzger
    Call Number: Z8665.45 M4 (Trowbridge Reference Room)
    The most current volume, published in 1993 by Watson F. Mills, expands on Metzgers original 1960 volume. It attempts to index all major scholarly periodical literature on the Apostle Paul. Entries are arranged according to subject matter and epistle.
  • An alphabetical subject index and index encyclopaedia to periodical articles on religion, 1890-1899 - Ernest Cushing Richardson
    Call Number: Z7753 .R53 1907 (Library Shelving Facility)
    Important resource for historical materials. 58,000 articles from over 600 journals are listed. Arrangement is by subject heading. Articles indexed are in French, German, Italian as well as English. Each subject heading in Volume 1 also provides for each subject a brief definition of the subject term or (for personal names as subject) brief biographical information. References to encyclopedia articles on the topic are also provided. Companion volume is Periodical Articles on Religion, 1890-1899.
  • Periodical articles on religion, 1890-1899 - Ernest Cushing Richardson
    Call Number: Xm13 907a (Library Shelving Facility)
    Companion volume to An Alphabetical Subject Index and Index Encyclopaedia to Periodical Articles on Religion, 1890-1899 (see above). The same works that are covered in An Alphabetical Subject Index are here indexed by author. The user must consult An Alphabetical Subject Index in order to get the abbreviations used.
